Building Lifesaving Systems—Together
The Appalachian Shelter Medicine Initiative (ASMI) exists to strengthen animal welfare across Eastern Kentucky through collaboration. We work alongside local shelters, county governments, rescues, veterinary professionals, businesses, and community members to build sustainable, evidence-based solutions that reduce suffering and improve access to care.
No single organization can solve pet overpopulation or shelter overcrowding alone. Real change happens when communities work together.

Shelter & Rescue Partners
ASMI’s foundation is built on strong partnerships with municipal shelters and 501(c)(3) rescue organizations throughout Eastern Kentucky.
Through these partnerships, ASMI provides:
- High-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN)
- Targeted medical and surgical care for shelter animals
- Support for intake management, transport, and recovery
- Protocol-driven care designed specifically for shelter environments
Our goal is to help shelters reduce intake pressure, improve outcomes, and save more lives—not by replacing local efforts, but by reinforcing them.
If your shelter or rescue is struggling with limited veterinary access, staffing shortages, or overwhelming intake, ASMI is here to help build solutions together.
County & Municipal Partnerships
Counties play a critical role in animal welfare outcomes. ASMI partners with county governments and animal control agencies to support humane, fiscally responsible population management strategies.
These partnerships may include:
- Regional spay/neuter access for shelter and community animals
- Medical support that reduces euthanasia and long-term housing costs
- Strategic planning for sustainable animal services infrastructure
- Data-driven approaches to intake reduction and shelter flow
ASMI understands the realities counties face—limited budgets, rural geography, and increasing demand. Our approach focuses on efficient systems that reduce long-term costs while improving animal welfare.
Community & Owned-Pet Services
Expanding Access Over Time
While ASMI’s current focus is stabilizing shelter and rescue populations, we recognize that community and owned pets are part of the same ecosystem.
As capacity grows, ASMI anticipates offering:
- Public spay/neuter clinic days for owned pets
- Low-cost or assisted services for underserved households
- Community-based outreach clinics focused on prevention
- Mobile access for rural areas with limited veterinary availability
Addressing shelter overpopulation requires supporting the people who care for animals at home, especially in communities where cost and distance are barriers to care.
Veterinary & Professional Collaboration
ASMI actively collaborates with veterinarians, technicians, assistants, students, academic institutions, and animal welfare professionals to strengthen regional capacity.
These partnerships support:
- High-standard surgical and medical care
- Training opportunities in shelter and rural medicine
- Workforce development in underserved regions
- Shared expertise that strengthens regional capacity
We believe in collaboration—not competition—and work to complement existing veterinary services while addressing gaps that often go unmet.
Business & Corporate Sponsorships
Local businesses are essential partners in building sustainable community programs. ASMI offers sponsorship opportunities, including potential recognition on a future mobile clinic and outreach materials.
Opportunities may include:
- Sponsorship recognition on ASMI’s mobile clinic
- Logo placement on outreach materials and events
- Public acknowledgment through ASMI’s website and social media
- Direct support of spay/neuter days, transport, or medical care
Business sponsorships help fund lifesaving services while demonstrating community leadership and investment in a healthier, more humane region.
How to Get Involved
Partnership with ASMI can take many forms—shelters and rescues seeking veterinary support, counties exploring sustainable solutions, businesses interested in sponsorship, professionals looking to collaborate, and community members advocating for humane care.
ASMI is committed to transparency, collaboration, and long-term impact. If you’re ready to be part of building a better future for animals and the people who care for them, we invite you to reach out.
The Appalachian Shelter Medicine Initiative (ASMI) is actively seeking letters of interest and support from animal shelters, rescues, municipalities, and community partners across Eastern Kentucky. These letters are not requests for funding or financial commitments. Instead, they demonstrate shared need, community readiness, and willingness to collaborate—critical elements for securing rural development and animal welfare grants.
A letter of interest does not obligate your organization to donate money, provide services, or enter into a formal agreement. It simply communicates that:
- Your organization recognizes the need for accessible veterinary and spay/neuter services
- You would be open to collaboration if funding is secured
- You support ASMI’s mission to strengthen animal welfare infrastructure in the region
